White Rhino Stock 1

The White Rhinoceros, sadly the Far Eastern culture prize rhino horn for it's so called medicinal properties. In parts of Arabia, the horns are used as a status symbol and made into dagger handles. The Southern White Rhino was one of the first kind of rhino to be at the brink of extinction in our lifetime. At the start of the 20th century there were only perhaps 30 surviving. By 1977 all international trade in rhinos and their products was prohibited. White rhinos are protected and and have recovered to around 11,500, but almost all live in one country, South Africa. These were taken at "South Lakes Wild Animal Park" in Dalton-on-Furness in the U.K. They have active and ongoing conservation programmes and projects all over the world, are the largest fundraisers for the "Sumatran Tiger Conservation", and founded 2 International charities - "The Sumatran Tiger Trust" and "Wildlife Protection Foundation".
